Asturias natural paradise

By land, sea or air. It doesn't matter how you get there. The lofty sight of the steep Cantabrian Mountains, with their rolling green valleys which meet the coastline in an abrupt outline which falls off into the deep blue Cantabrian Sea, captivates you before you even step foot in Asturias. This is just the start of a unique experience for which you are going to need all five senses. Without them you will not be able to taste its gastronomy, be stunned by its architecture, breathe its nature, listen to its urban heartbeat or enjoy its hospitality.

Cyder

Asturian cider is an Asturian drink made from the apples of the region. It is an exponent of the local Asturian culture, and of the 'chigres' (traditional Asturian cider houses), a place where people have gathered for centuries. Unlike other ciders, Asturian cider has to be poured. The video below shows an example of a cider house where it is poured:

Madreñas

Madreñas, a typical asturian shoe, have been used as a work shoe for centuries in asturias. They are made of wood, which is sturdy and protects the foot from possible knocks. Asturian miners used to wear them in the mines to protect themselves.

Fabada

Fabada asturiana is a traditional Asturian dish made from beans, chorizo, black pudding and pork shoulder. It is a delicious delicacy that is internationally appreciated. You cannot leave Asturias without having tried it.

Regional costumes

During popular festivals it is common to dress in traditional costumes. Although the form and basis of the costumes are similar, they differ greatly in colour from one council to another.

Cantabrian brown bear

The Cantabrian brown bear is one of the smallest brown bear subspecies in the world. Males can exceed 180 kg, while females weigh around 100 or 140 kg, although they suffer enormous variations in weight throughout the year. There are only a few wild specimens left in the Cantabrian mountain range. They renew their coat once a year, in summer, and its shade varies from yellowish-brown to dark brown. Their sense of smell, their most developed sense, is extremely acute. They are well able to climb trees and stand on their hind legs to gain access to certain foods.

Asturian Veal

Asturian veal is one of the best Spanish meats. They have a Protected Geographical Indication, which guarantees the meat of animals born, reared and fattened in the Principality of Asturias, from the breeds Asturiana de los Valles, Asturiana de la montaña, and their crosses between them. The cows are found grazing in high mountain pasture and have a characteristic brownish colour.
